Kang Hye-Sook

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of play therapy and social skill training for a 10-year-old boy diagnosed of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and parent training for his mother. It was found that ADHD was caused by the combination of difficult temperament and insecure attachment to his mother. The therapy had three goals: 1) to mitigate ADHD by establishing consistent and acceptable relationship between the therapist and the child; 2) to improve social skills of the child through social skill training; and 3) to lower parenting stress of his mother through parent training. The results showed that the play therapy contributed to decreasing the child¡¯s ADHD behaviors, increasing self-esteem of the child, and decreasing the level of stress from daily life. Also, the mother¡¯s parenting stress was reduced and her relationship with her child was improved.
